Keys to Boosting Your Immune System

There are things we can do to continually boost our immune systems:

We live in a bacteria infested world. Aside from that, there are thousands of viruses that may or may not affect you. With this being said, here are some tips to promoting a healthy immune system!

1.) Get plenty of sleep: did you know that sleep deprivation contributes to the suppression of your immune system in that it increases Cortisol in your body? Long-term elevation of this hormone CAN suppress your immune system!

2.) Avoid alcohol: excessive consumption of alcohol negatively affects one's immune system! Read this fascinating PubMed source here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19630706

3.) Eat foods that contribute to healthy immune system functioning: think fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds! Some foods to stay away from that may cause congestion, inflammation, or weakened immune systems include: sugar, processed carbohydrates, processed foods that are not in a naturally occurring state and gluten (aka Glyphosate).

4.) Take a quality probiotic: per pubmed.gov, "Probiotic supplementation reduces the duration and incidence of infections but not severity in elite rugby union players."

5.) Get some Vitamin D: per everydayhealth.com, "Sunlight triggers the skin’s production of vitamin D. In the summer, a 10-15 minute exposure (minus sunscreen) is enough. However, above 42 degrees latitude (Boston) from November through February, sunlight is too feeble and few foods contain this vitamin. Low vitamin D levels correlate with a greater risk of respiratory infection. A 2010 study in kids showed that 1200 IU a day of supplemental vitamin D reduced the risk of influenza A. However, a 2012 study that involved supplementing adults with colon cancer with 1000 IU a day failed to demonstrate protection against upper respiratory infections." I also recommend a Vitamin D supplement!

6.) Grab some Garlic: Garlic is one of the strongest naturally occurring broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent and immune booster! You can mince it and chew it up or mince it and swallow it whole- whatever you do, consume it in raw form!

7.) Eat some medicinal mushrooms!

8.) Herbs, herbs, herbs: Garlic, Astragalus, Milk Thistle, Ginseng, Green Tea, Black Cumin, and Licorice are all reported to have immune boosting benefits!

9.) Avoiding stress: it has been scientifically proven that stress can negatively affect your immune system. Per simplypsychology.org, "short term suppression of the immune system is not dangerous. However, chronic suppression leaves the body vulnerable to infection and disease." Read the full article here: https://www.simplypsychology.org/stress-immune.html

10.) Exercise regularly: "A regular exercise routine does much more than shape your body, it fortifies the immune system with proper circulation and better sleep. It shouldn’t take long for your immunity to make clear improvements. While you’re exercising, remember to keep yourself hydrated before, during and after exercising. This will help flush out toxins and transport the minerals and vitamins from a healthy diet. Also remain wary of the germ loaded bars, grips and machines in public gyms."
