A 41-year-old woman died on Jan. 1, 2021 in Trofa, Portugal, two days after receiving the first dose of Pfizer/BioNTech’s experimental messenger RNA (mRNA) BNT162b2 vaccine for COVID-19. Sonia Acevedo, who worked as a surgical assistant at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) in Porto, was reported to have been in “perfect health” prior to her vaccination.1 2

“I didn’t notice anything different in my mother. She was fine. She just said that the area where she had been vaccinated hurt,” said Acevedo’s daughter. “We don’t know what happened. It all happened quickly and with no explanation.”1

The IPO issued the following statement:

With regards to the sudden death of an operational assistant from the Porto IPO on January 1, 2021, the Board of Directors confirms the event and expresses sincere regret to family and friends in the certainty that this loss is also felt here. The explanation of the cause of death will follow the usual procedures in these circumstances.3

Acevedo’s father said, “She was okay. She hadn’t had any health problems. She had the COVID-19 vaccine but she didn’t have any symptoms. I don’t know what happened. I just want answers. I want to know what led to my daughter’s death.”3

Swiss Woman Dies Five Days After Receiving Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine

In a separate incident, a 90-year-old woman died on Dec. 29, 2020 in Lucerne, Switzerland, less than a week after being the first person in the country to be given the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine. According to news reports, the woman—a nursing home resident—was vaccinated on Dec. 24. Two days later, she reportedly complained having of “urethral and abdominal pain” and, subsequently, her “blood pressure dropped and her pulse spiked.”4 5 6 7

Following an investigation into the case, Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products (Swissmedic) concluded:

[B]ased on the medical history and disease development, a connection between the death and the COVID-19 vaccination is highly unlikely. Neither the medical history nor the acute course of disease suggest a direct causal link between the COVID-19 vaccine and the death.5 6

The deceased woman had reportedly suffered a previous negative reaction to an influenza vaccine. Her death was officially attributed to “pre-existing diseases.”5 7

Two Elderly Persons Die in Norway Two Days After Getting Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccines

More recently, two nursing home residents in Norway died two days after being vaccinated with the BNT162b2 vaccine.8 9 10

The Norwegian Medicines Agency (NoMA) reported:

On Tuesday, January 5, we received two reports about death that occurred in a few days after the vaccination. The inhabitants of chosen homes for elderly people received Comirnaty (brand name for BNT162b2) vaccine.8

NoMA medical director Steiner Madsen, MD acknowledged the possibility that the BNT162b2 vaccine may have caused the two deaths. “Possibly, lethal cases will occur. We should estimate, whether or not the vaccine is the reason for death or it is a coincidence that it took place right after the vaccination,” Dr. Madsen said.8 9 10
